How Much Does a Garage Door Cost? (2026 Prices)

Updated September 2026

A standard single-car steel garage door runs $550–$1,800 installed, with $993 the published national average (Fixr). A double-car 16×7 steel door runs $800–$3,800 installed — with the top of that band likely understated, because the double-door labor premium is unpublished. Materials-only bands run cheaper: an 8×7 steel door is $450–$1,500 before labor, and installation labor adds a flat $100–$300 per single door.

Two pricing bases exist in the published guides, and this page keeps them distinct: installed figures (door + professional installation labor) and materials-only figures (the door itself, before labor). Every table below labels which is which.

Drift recheck (2026-09-26): the Fixr edition behind the primary bands is still dated January 31, 2025 — the staleness stands — and every Fixr anchor was re-verified EXACT (zero drift). Angi's insulated band ($1,100–$4,200) was re-confirmed verbatim against the May 9, 2026 Wayback snapshot. No band was re-based.

Cost by material

Materials-only bands from the dataset's install tables, with steel shown installed and materials-only:

MaterialSingle, 8×7 (materials)Double, 16×7 (materials)Notes
Steel$450–$975–$1,500$700–$2,100–$3,500The budget anchor; $993 installed is the published national average
Wood$1,000–$3,500$2,000–$4,000–$6,000Species (redwood/cedar premium) and carriage styling drive the band; heavier doors need stronger hardware
Aluminum$500–$1,250–$2,000$800–$2,300–$3,800Rust-resistant and light; soft metal dents; full-view glass is the premium configuration
Insulated$600–$1,300–$2,000 (any base material)Second-source installed high $4,200Fixr: insulated doors “range from $600 to $2,000, depending on the material"; Angi's installed band ($1,100–$4,200) extends the effective high

Wood is the honest premium case: species, custom carriage styling, and weight all push the band up — Fixr's high-end worked example is an installed custom redwood double with automatic opener and glass windows at about $4,118.

Cost by size

The single-to-double jump is real but not linear:

  • Single, 8×7 steel: $550–$993–$1,800 installed ($993 = Fixr's published national average for an installed sectional steel door).
  • Double, 16×7 steel: $800–$2,400–$3,800 installed — composed from materials ($700–$3,500) plus single-door flat labor ($100–$300).

The honest caveat, recorded in the dataset: Fixr says double-door installation labor “starts” higher than single-door labor but publishes no figure, so the composed double-door high end is treated as understated — the real top of the double-door band sits somewhere above $3,800. A second pricing pass (Angi, via Wayback) puts a 16×7 steel double at $1,400–$3,800 installed, which corroborates the shape of the band without changing it.

Installation vs materials-only pricing

The two unit definitions, stated plainly:

  • Installed figures include equipment + professional installation labor. The single-door flat labor band is $100–$300 (Fixr); HomeGuide books labor at $200–$500. These are the figures to compare against a contractor quote.
  • Materials-only figures are the door itself — useful when comparing door prices at retail, and the basis for the wood and aluminum rows in the dataset (Fixr's materials table). A non-insulated steel door without installation runs $474 (Fixr's door-only anchor).

Which one a quote is using is the first question to ask: a “$1,200 door” and a “$1,200 installed door” are different products.

Garage door opener cost

On the buy side, the opener is the main add-on:

  • Opener unit: $300–$350 (Fixr install guide), or $150–$500 per Home Depot's service pricing.
  • By drive type: chain-drive, belt-drive, direct-drive ($300-$500), jackshaft ($550-$640) (Fixr). Thumbtack's marketplace median for an opener is ~$383 ($206–$700); Angi books opener installed at $218–$540 (avg $379).
  • Installation: opener labor runs $178–$250 (Home Depot); a new opener installed lands $250–$500 (HomeGuide).
  • Electrical: if a new circuit is needed, electricians run $40–$120/hr (Fixr).
  • Full door + opener combo: $940–$2,590 published (Fixr) when the door and opener are replaced together.

What drives the price

  • Material and gauge. Steel anchors the low end; wood species (redwood, cedar) and carriage-house styling dominate the high end; aluminum sits between with rust resistance as its selling point.
  • Size. 16×7 doubles cost more than 8×7 singles — with the double-door labor premium unpublished, per the honest note above.
  • Insulation level. Polyurethane/polystyrene cores; R-value varies by product and thickness. R-value ranges are the citable measure — no standardized savings estimate exists (see the FAQ).
  • Windows and decorative hardware. Glass inserts and carriage hardware are the classic upsells; Fixr's $4,118 worked example includes both plus an opener.
  • Old-door removal: $50–$200 when not folded into the estimate (dataset cost drivers).
  • Opener inclusion and any electrical work for a new circuit.
  • Region. Labor markets move the band; in Florida wind-borne-debris regions, doors must be impact-rated and permitted — a structural price factor, not an upsell.

FAQ

What's the cheapest garage door?

A single 8×7 steel door: $450–$1,500 in materials, $550–$1,800 installed with $993 the published national average (Fixr). Thumbtack's marketplace medians put a single 8×7 uninsulated door at ~$550.

Why do wood doors cost more?

Species and weight. Premium woods (redwood, cedar) and custom carriage styling push materials to $1,000–$3,500 single and $2,000–$6,000 double (Fixr); heavier doors also need heavier-duty hardware. Fixr's worked example — installed custom redwood with opener and glass — lands around $4,118.

What does installation labor add?

A flat $100–$300 per single door (Fixr). HomeGuide books $200–$500. Double-door labor runs higher, but no publisher separates the premium — which is why the double-door installed high end is flagged as understated.

Is a double door twice the price?

No. A 16×7 steel double runs $800–$3,800 installed versus $550–$1,800 single — more, but not double. The derivation is materials plus single-door labor, and the double labor premium is unpublished, so the top end is treated as understated.

Do insulated doors qualify for a federal tax credit?

No. There is no ENERGY STAR category for residential garage doors (garages are unconditioned space), so they do not qualify for the Section 25C credit that covers certified exterior doors into conditioned space. R-value ranges ($600–$2,000 materials; up to $4,200 installed for premium insulated units) are the citable efficiency figures — not energy-bill claims.
