Moving Cost: Local vs Long-Distance Budgets
Updated November 2026 · Prices checked 2026-11-06 — sources cited below.
A two- to three-bedroom move averages $1,400 locally or $5,450 over 1,000 miles in Moving.com’s opening estimate, based on about 7,500 pounds. Those are planning examples, not offers. Your inventory, route, access and included services determine the bill.

Start with the shipment, not just the bedroom count
Two homes with the same bedroom count can have very different shipment weights. Make a room-by-room inventory, include the garage and storage unit, and identify bulky or fragile items. Give each mover the same list. Moving.com says interstate pricing depends on shipment weight, mileage and labor; local moves are commonly billed by the hour, although some firms offer flat rates.
The $5,450 headline example is specifically a 1,000-mile, roughly 7,500-pound move. It is not a per-mile tariff and should not be multiplied by mileage to predict a different journey. A studio, a container shipment and a full-service family-house move are not interchangeable products.
A source conflict worth noticing before you budget
Moving.com’s opening text gives $1,400 local and $5,450 long-distance averages, but its FAQ still gives $1,250 and $4,890 for similar two- to three-bedroom assumptions. We use the opening figures for the headline and disclose the mismatch rather than averaging them or calling both current survey results. The page does not explain the difference. Its broad long-distance spread, $1,252 to more than $15,729, shows how far unlike shipments can diverge; that is not a likely band around your quote.
Build a complete move budget
Ask whether the written estimate includes packing, boxes, disassembly, reassembly, stairs, long carries, elevators and loading access at both ends. Then list storage-in-transit, delivery timing and valuation protection separately. No universal surcharge is assumed here: request the actual charge or tariff from the mover. Keep personal travel, temporary lodging and overlapping housing costs in a separate relocation budget, not hidden inside a moving-company estimate.
For labor-only help, Moving.com publishes $41–$80 per mover per hour. That is not the rate for a truck plus a whole crew. As labeled arithmetic, two movers for four hours at that labor range would be $328–$640 before anything else. Minimum hours, travel time or equipment can change the invoice; get those terms before using this example.
Full service, container or rental truck?
Full service transfers more loading, driving and scheduling work to the provider. A container can separate loading time from transport but introduces placement, pickup and delivery constraints. A rental truck moves the driving, fuel planning and much of the labor onto you. Compare the same door-to-door scope: the cheapest advertised vehicle rate can omit fuel, mileage, supplies or help at the destination.
Moving.com identifies May through September as peak season and suggests comparing off-season, midweek or midmonth dates. Treat that as a quote-shopping lever, not a guaranteed percentage saving. Reduce inventory before asking for revised quotes so each estimate describes the belongings you will actually move.
Use this quote-comparison checklist
- Same inventory, origin, destination, access and dates on every quote.
- Identify the company transporting the goods and whether an intermediary is arranging the move.
- Ask what can change the final charge and how additional work is authorized.
- Get packing, storage, valuation, delivery window and cancellation terms in writing.
- Keep an inventory and photographs of valuable items; review liability options before moving day.
For an interstate move, consult FMCSA’s Protect Your Move resources for consumer rights and mover registration. This guide does not substitute a national average for a shipment-specific written estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a two- to three-bedroom move cost?
Moving.com’s opening estimate is $1,400 local or $5,450 over 1,000 miles for roughly 7,500 pounds. Its FAQ carries lower figures; the disagreement is disclosed here. Get a written estimate for your shipment.
Can I estimate an interstate move with a price per mile?
Not reliably from a national average. Shipment weight, route, access, service level and timing matter; the 1,000-mile example is not a per-mile tariff.
Are labor-only hourly rates for the whole crew?
Moving.com labels $41–$80 per mover per hour. Multiply by workers and hours only for a labor illustration; ask about minimums, travel, truck and equipment separately.
