Gutter replacement costs

Updated October 2026 · Data as of 2026-09-26

Replacing gutters on a whole home costs $724–$4,222 installed (about $2,055 typical). Per linear foot that is $3–$25/LF (typical $14), and the standard 200-LF total runs $600–$2,800–$5,000. Where you land is set by material, linear feet, stories and downspout count — plus whether the old system comes off. Every figure below is a cited installed band; per-source bands are kept separate and never averaged.

Replacement cost by linear feet

Full-replacement totals, installed. These are whole-project bands — tear-off is not included (see removal below):

Linear feetInstalled total (low–typical–high)Source detail
100 linear feet$300–$1,400–$2,500Thumbtack (single-publisher, flagged)
200 linear feet$600–$2,800–$5,000Thumbtack totals; Fixr cross-check 200 LF aluminum $1,729–$3,145
300 linear feet$900–$4,200–$7,500Thumbtack (single-publisher, flagged)

Read: the 200-LF row straddles two publishers — Thumbtack's totals and Fixr's aluminum cross-check — so it carries a wider band than the single-publisher 100- and 300-LF rows. Treat the 100/300 rows as directional (single-publisher).

Replacement cost per linear foot, by material

The per-LF replacement band, installed (not materials-only):

MaterialPer-LF installed (low–typical–high)Source detail
Vinyl (PVC)$3–$4–$5/LFThumbtack (single-publisher, flagged)
Aluminum$4–$9–$13/LFThumbtack install $4–$9/LF; Fixr material $7–$13/LF
Seamless$8–$10–$12/LFThumbtack ~$10/ft; band widened conservatively (flagged)
Steel$9–$15–$20/LFThumbtack (single-publisher, flagged); 35%+ above aluminum
Copper$18–$22–$32/LFThumbtack $20–$25/LF; Fixr material $18–$32/LF
Any material (overall)$3–$25/LFThumbtack install $3–$25/LF

Unit caution: the aluminum and copper rows mix an installed band with a materials-only band from Fixr — the dataset records both and keeps them distinct. Per-LF install, not materials-only, is what to budget from. The vinyl, steel and seamless rows are single-publisher (Thumbtack) — directional only.

The tear-off: old-gutter removal and disposal

Replacement — unlike a first install — adds removal. Two dataset rows cover it, and they are not the same unit:

  • Per linear foot: $1–$2.38/LF (Fixr $1.31–$2.38; Angi $1–$2; HomeAdvisor $1–$2).
  • Per job: $100–$200–$300 (Thumbtack $100–$300; Fixr ~$1/LF).

A 200-LF tear-off lands around $150–$350 (Angi/HA book) — though Fixr's per-LF math reaches $262–$476, a discrepancy the dataset keeps as bands rather than averaging. Budget removal, then add the new system on top.

Add-ons that decide the real total

Add-onBandUnit / note
Downspouts$5–$12–$18/LF, or $30–$75 eachPer LF / each — typical home 4–5 units; per-each math derived (flagged)
Gutter guards$1.50–$5–$10/LFPer LF — whole-system Fixr band $69–$600; reduces, never eliminates, cleaning
Fascia board repair$4–$22/LFPer LF — if the wood behind the old gutters is rotted

Read: fascia is the wildcard. Rotted boards behind a torn-off run can add $4–$22/LF before new gutters go up, so the 200-LF total can rise by hundreds of dollars on inspection.

Material choice for a replacement

The material decision is the same as a first install — the gutters hub covers it in depth — but replacement reframes the math around lifespan vs upfront:

  • Vinyl ($3–$5/LF) — shortest life (10–20 yrs); fine for a rental refresh, poor for a long-hold home.
  • Aluminum ($4–$13/LF) — the seamless standard; rust-proof, dents in hail.
  • Seamless ($8–$12/LF) — pro-only, roll-formed on site; zero mid-span joints.
  • Steel ($9–$20/LF) — sturdier vs snow/impact; coating quality drives rust risk.
  • Copper ($18–$32/LF) — 50–100+ yr lifespan; you pay once, for decades.

Repair, replace, or add guards?

  • Repair — localized leaks, re-pitching or patching runs $194–$320–$643 per job. If the system is otherwise sound, repair beats replacement.
  • Replace — when seams are failing across the run, or the gutters are undersized for the roof, budget from the per-LF/total bands plus removal.
  • Add guards instead — if the goal is maintenance reduction, guards run $1.50–$5–$10/LF and cut scooping from 2–4×/yr to brushing 1–2×/yr. They do not replace a failing system.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace gutters?

$724–$4,222 installed whole-home; $3–$25 per linear foot; a standard 200-LF replacement runs $600–$2,800–$5,000 before tear-off.

How much does gutter removal add?

$1–$2.38/LF, or about $150–$350 for a 200-LF home (Fixr's per-LF math runs higher — kept as bands).

Is seamless worth it for a replacement?

Seamless runs $8–$10–$12/LF vs aluminum $4–$9–$13/LF; seamless removes mid-span seams but is pro-only. The delta buys leak points, not a different material.

Do I need new gutters if only one section leaks?

No — localized repair runs $194–$320–$643 per job. Replace when seams fail across the run, not for one leak.
